The Volvo Ocean Race Legends Regatta
— 09 Nov 2011
The Volvo Ocean Race Legends Regatta and Reunion proved to be a great success, bringing together yachts and crew for all previous editions of the Whitbread Round-The-World and Volvo Ocean Races. Included within the sixteen yacht fleet was the Rob Humphreys designed Rothmans having competed in the 1989-90 Race, finishing fourth. In fact there was a strong contingent of yachts from that vintage, including the giant ketches Steinlager 2 and Fisher & Paykel.
After the first day of racing was abandoned through lack of wind, conditions on the second day could not have been better, with the Legends boats powering around a 22-mile course in up to 30 knots of breeze. Sailing as part of the crew were original Rothmans crew members Vincent Geake, Patrick Banfield and Mark Willett, alongside fellow Volvo & Whitbread sailors Peter Metcalfe, Gunnar Krantz and Klabbe Nylöf. Rothman’s designer Rob Humphreys, who was also racing on Rothmans during the event commented “it was a fantastic initiative on Volvo’s part and great to sail on Rothmans again. The owners have done an amazing job restoring her to her original condition”.
